My 97 Town car is Smoking! BADDDD!!!
Auto Tag: Town CarI was stuck in sop and go traffic (Not unusual in Toronto, Ontario) and I started getting smoke out of my exhaust. First it was a small amount, but then it got worse, and worse...I had people rolling down the window and telling me the back of the car was on fire! That is how bad the smoke was!!! It was a white smoke.
I brought it to my mechanic about 2 min. before he closed and told him what had happened. He thought that it may have been the Valve stem seals. Personally I do't see how it could be those...They would give off blue smoke if they were shot, right???
Then I thought, maybe head gasket...but the car has the same amount of power, so it can't be that.
My question is...What the heck could it be thatis causing all the smoke during stop and go traffic? As soon as I passed the stop and go, it was fine.
Any ideas???
Hello, I have a 95 LTC that started to do the exact same thing arouns 145,000 on it. Noticed it in the winter more but as time went on, now I notice it all year around. I have 171, 900 on it now and it does get pretty bad at some red lights. I did notice however since I did my intake gaskets last week, that it doesn't do it as much. And the gaskets were just about to break into 2 pieces. If you deciede to replace them, go to a Ford dealership and buy them from there, I put Advance Auto Parts ones on mine and was replacing them again the next day, holding them up to each other, the Ford gaskets and wider and thincker on the rubber itself.... Hope this helps..
P.S.
People do stare at me but remember, the balls in your court. Meaning if they piss you off enough, just keep your foot on the brake and tap the gas for about 6 seconds, that will really piss them off.
LOL
Without seeing the car.. and an avid listener to everything Town Car...
I'm on the side of your mechanic's original diagnosis. Valve seals don't last more than 100k miles. Sure, you'll have some variations due to driving conditions Etc but the fact that their rubber and exposed to extreme heat and containments.. their always dried out and cracking within 100k miles.
White smoke.... well, that's debatable.. blue smoke looks allot like white smoke when you're running from it.
Yes, your intake manifold gaskets could be shot, but right after you had a new intake installed?? Not too likely I would guess.
The truth of the matter is worse actually.. most likely your valve guides are also worn and in need of replacing.. as a back-yard mechanic of sorts you would know, that means a valve job too. Yeah, you could knurl the existing guides and refit everything to save a few pennies short term, and maybe that's the right thing for some folks.. maybe that's the right thing for this particular engine.. only one person can make that call.
Valve stem seals are the quick fix.. it doesn't matter if the guides are loose, or the lack of proper oil changes has built up a 1/2" of sludge on every internal surface, the new seals WILL stop the smoking for as long as they retain their soft pliable properties.
There are a few write-ups on how to replace your own seals in this 4.6 engine.. the ones that come to mind immediately are here: (note the special tool, that sucker ain't cheap)

Both of those tech articles are written by guys just like us, and they begin with a story on how they made the decision to take the plunge. Have a look, you'll be entertained to say the least.
This was written somewhere on the net, I'll just paste it here for the curious:
I like Steve responce better than my own.. Lol

1) How much oil is being used between oil changes?
2) Is your coolant low?
3) What do you think the car is worth?
keep in mind 240k miles!
