Break Rotor ?

Car Tag: Performance Related Discussion

I need to take my stock rotor adn turn it into a Hub, the rotor itself has my wheel studs in it and i want to slide a larger rotor over top, therefore i need to remove all the orignal breaking surface for the rotor. PIctures will explain better.Any idea where i can get this done, no shots in the dark please i will not be able to drive around place to place after i take the rotor off

I need to turn it into this

Any machine shop should be able to do it.

Any machine shop can do it. Take the new Grand Am (or whatever) rotor along. Explain that you want the old one machined so that the hub just fits into the new rotor. You may need new longer studs as well.

sounds ridiculous hope it works out for you

I'm not sure you want to be doing that. Rotors aren't designed for that kinds of stress.

The Fiero rotor is a combo rotor hub/bearing. Unfortunately it is also solid (non-vented).A common upgrade is to trim the stock rotor down to the hub and use a Grand Am vented rotor (& caliper). There are other upgrades to bigger rotor/calipers, but most are fairly expensive. This is pretty cheap down home tech. There is no problem with the cut down rotor/hub assembly due to extra stress. However you have added the thickness of the new rotor over the studs, so they may be a bit short to engage the wheel nuts properly. Just swap them for a slightly longer stud.

man i knew the Fiero guys were Ghetto, but sheesh iI never knew they were willing to take it this far

Unfortunately, APC neglected to add us to their vast array of quality aftermarket parts. When you play with 20 year old toys, you need to be a little inventive. Lucky for us that GM tends to rob the parts bin and lots of parts interchange with a little 'ghetto' engineering.Even when someone actually makes parts, they tend to screw it up. The guy who made drop spindles made them to fit old style Fiero solid rotors on them. It had to be just as easy to design them to accept a real bearing assembly, separate from the brake rotor. Even to make Mustang stuff fit would be a plus as the hot rod market is full of brake options. And to make things worse, we're a cheap bunch. Take a $1500 Fiero, shove a $1500 3800 s/c motor and tranny in and go to town on the cheap with a low 13 - high 12 second car that handles on the road.

In calgary, it would probably be mid-high 13's... But still tempting on around a 3k budget

The only thing that i would think is put under additional stress in this setup is the wheel bearing and spindle being that it is a smaller diameter then a corvette. However the extra stress from that is no different then putting on heavier rims.

Besides which, there is no great weight leaning side to side in the front.Sorry about the times. One of the guys has one with 400,000 kms on it, but he does have a smaller pulley installed as the only mod. He's consistent at around the 13 second mark. I saw it run a 12.9 on street tires. In any case they're a great deal of fun. กก
